Development holds the key to business success 25/05/2006

Introduction
On Learning at Work Day (25th May), Investors in People is urging employers to focus on employee development all year round or else risk losing the lifeblood of their business.

Publication
June Williams, Director of Investors in People, said,

“Our research1 has shown that lack of development opportunities is one of the main reasons for employees leaving their jobs. Given increasing concern about the shrinking talent pool and growing skill shortages, employers should see employee development as a business priority. They should be ensuring clear development plans that stimulate and challenge employees and, in doing so, keep the business on track.

“Learning at Work Day provides a valuable opportunity for employers to take a step back and consider what skills they need – now and in the future – and what development opportunities they are offering employees in order to meet this need. Unless the two are aligned, employers are undermining their own progress and employees are more likely to leave."

Organisations across the country will be taking part in Learning at Work Day, including Thomson Directories, an Investors in People Champion organisation. Throughout the day, Thomson will be encouraging employees to share their skills with colleagues in area such as digital photography, self-defense, sign language, street dancing and even the art of successful ebay trading.
